A graduate assistantship for a Ph.D. candidate is available in the research group of Aaron Gassmann in the Department of Entomology at Iowa State University. Current research within this group focuses on insect resistance management, integrated pest management, agroecology, and interactions between agricultural pest insects and crops producing insecticidal toxins derived from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). Possible research topics addressed through this assistantship could include: fitness trade-offs that accompany Bt resistance; genetic analysis of Bt resistance traits; tritrophic interactions among insects, plants and entomopathogens; landscape level analysis of the occurrence of Bt resistance in western corn rootworm; and interactions of western corn rootworm with RNAi corn.
